  • Interview: Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale

    Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale is a foundational architect of American dance music. Known as the Godmother of House, she was the first woman to play house music on Detroit radio, establishing a presence that would influence generations of artists and audiences alike. From the late 1980s onward, Hale has shaped the landscape of electronic music through a career that spans radio, clubs, education, and activism.

  • Radio: Blake Lee

    Tonight's guest is Blake Lee (OFNOT), a composer and longtime guitarist/music director for Lana Del Rey, based in Los Angeles. Blake released his solo debut, No Sound In Space - an expansive, cinematic meditation on the unknown - on KMRU’s OFNOT label last November. Inspired by the vastness of space and the freedom of improvisation, Blake weaves haunting melodies, ethereal drones and deep sonic explorations. Featuring collaborations with KMRU on the tracks Miura and Waiting, No Sound In Space is an intuitive, organic work that moves between ambient, experimental and cinematic soundscapes.

As co-founder and director of London Contemporary Voices, ILĀ has collaborated with over 25 Grammy-winning artists, including Florence + The Machine, Imogen Heap, and U2, and contributed to major projects such as the BBC Proms and runway shows for Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger.

    AQUTIE is an emerging artist who's gaining recognition in the music scene, having secured notable support slots in New York City for artists like Black Coffee and Uncle Waffle and performances alongside Dennis Ferrer, HoneyLuv, and Afriqua. AQUTIE curates her own event series “Heat House” in Brooklyn. The event showcases dance music across the African Diasporas and has attracted attendees such as Janelle Monae, Little Simz, Sir John, Jitwam, and more.

    Nina's guest is Copenhagen-based, Finnish experimental vocalist and producer Johanna Sulkunen. She is known for her expressive and exploratory voice in experimental jazz, electronic music, avant garde and electroacoustic composition. Her 'Coexistence' LP emphasises listening to marginalised voices, fostering connection and community, and is the final part of her Sonority trilogy, which underscores the human voice as both deeply personal and a unifying force

  • Radio: KÁRYYN (Mute Records)

    Nina's guest is Armenian-American vocalist, songwriter, composer/producer and multimedia artist KÁRYYN. Her 'Calm KAOSS!' EP is due to be released via Mute Records on 22 May 2024.

    Born in the prolific period following her European tour, Calm KAOSS! was created in partnership with British record producer James Ford (Blur, Haim, Gorillaz, Depeche Mode, Florence & The Machine). The project sees KÁRYYN commune with her past, present and future selves, traveling through time to reveal transformative prem onitions from the future in scientific and spiritual language.

    New York-based composer and producer Kelly Moran has spent the past decade challenging traditional piano conventions with an experimental approach. Her upcoming album, "Moves in the Field" was inspired by her experience composing with Missy Mazzoli and the Yamaha Disklavier during the pandemic.

    Nina's guest is pianist Casimir Liberski talking about his collaboration with Ruins founder Tatsuya Yoshida on their debut album, "Troubled Water" out on Belgian imprint Totalism.

    From iconic B2Bs to legendary residencies, DJ Paulette has dominated the dance scene for 30+ years. She's an award-winning DJ and recipient of the DJ Mag Top 100 Lifetime Achievement Award and a force in disco, house, and techno. DJ Paulette's latest achievement is the release of her book "Welcome to the Club: The Life and Lessons of a Black Woman DJ". The book marks the debut of DJ Paulette as the first Black woman to pen her experiences in EDM and house music.

    Nina welcomes Italian-German composer, DJ, label owner and multi-instrumentalist David August before he brings his kinetic audiovisual live experience to the Barbican Centre. August leads the innovative label 99CHANTS, collaborating with diverse artists like Lena Platonos, KMRU, Cansu Tanrikulu, and Sushma Soma. His latest album, VĪS, is a richly conceptual journey exploring an alternate human evolution through sound, born from extensive self-exploration, collaboration, and research.

    Nina welcomes Ciel, a producer, pianist, and DJ hailing from Xi'an and currently based in Toronto. Ciel co-heads the Parallel Minds label and is also a member of the Discwoman collective. As a touring artist, she has performed at some of the most renowned venues and festivals across the globe, including Berghain, Smartbar, Mutek, and Dimensions. Ciel's latest EP, "ORLANDO," was released on !K7, while her previous works were published on Jacktone Records and Ghostly International's sister label Spectral Sound.

    Elkka is a Cardiff-born DJ and producer based in London. She has released music on labels such as Technicolour, Ninja Tune, and her own label and party, Femme Culture. Elkka is the next curator of DJ-Kicks - a mix that takes listeners on an intoxicating journey through Chicago house, disco, leftfield techno, and UK bass. Her mix, out this Wednesday, April 26 via !K7 Records.

  • Radio: Evita Manji (PAN Records)

    Nina chats to musician and vocalist Evita Manji about their debut album (released on PAN records), "Spandrel?" with tracks pieced together from the vapours of contemporary club music, baroque pop, and experimental sound design, a way for Manji to examine their relationship with the world at large and within, disassembling systems of control and highlighting interconnectedness.

    Nina chats to Lotus Eater, a duo consisting of Luca Mortellaro (Lucy/Stroboscopic Artefacts) and Seth Horvitz (Rrose/Eaux), techno artists just as comfortable operating in the uncharted area of experimental music who have gained a cult following, both influencing and challenging the direction of contemporary electronic music.

    Nina's guests are New York-based Iranian-Canadian duo Saint Abdullah (Planet Mu) and Irish composer and producer Ian McDonnell, aka Eomac (Planet Mu, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Bedouin Records) chatting about their collaboration and recent album, Patience of a Traitor, on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People.

  • Radio: Perera Elsewhere (Friends of Friends Music)

    Nina's guest is Perera Elsewhere: the London-born, Berlin-based Sri Lankan experimental pop songwriter/electronic musician is a 2022 Best Act finalist for German VIA! Awards. Former Jahcoozi singer, Perera composed soundtracks for directors such as Ava DuVernay and Oscar-winning Paolo Sorrentino, as well as for moving image, art installations and dance shows. She is producing the new album of German icon Nina Hagen.

  • Radio: Deena Abdelwahed (InFiné)

    Nina's guest is acclaimed Tunisian live performer, producer and DJ Deena Abdelwahed Deena’s work features sounds of her native Tunisia turned into percussive techno and is released on the InFiné label. Deena speaks about her work and her latest collaboration with Beirut-born, Berlin-based improvisation artist Mazen Kerbaj on Morphine Records.

  • Radio: Domingæ (Sacred Bones)

    Domingæ is a musician, filmmaker, and founder of Chilean krautrock band Föllakzoid. For ten years she has released music with the record label Sacred Bones (home to David Lynch, John Carpenter, The Soft Moon). She has worked with artists such as DJ Nobu, minimalist composer Jozef van Wissem (Only Lovers Left Alive), Jason Pierce (Spacemen 3/Spiritualized), designer Kozaburo, and Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode). Nina chats to Domingæ about her A/V debut LP 'Æ'.
